A 16-year-old Highgate School pupil died after a car hit her on North Road on Thursday morning. A driver, 68, is on bail and police want dashcam footage.
A 16-year-old girl died after she was hit by a car on North Road in Highgate on Thursday morning. She was a pupil at Highgate School and was on her way to school, according to Haringey Council.
Police were called at 08:13 on Thursday 24 September to a collision between a pedestrian and a car. That timing and what follows come from the Metropolitan Police’s statement on Friday afternoon.
- Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance.
- The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
- A 68-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
- Her next of kin have been told and are supported by specialist officers.
The Met named her on Friday, and her family paid tribute to her in the same statement. The family has asked for privacy.
Police appeal for footage
The investigation is led by Detective Inspector Simon Ager. He said officers are “working to establish exactly what happened”.
“We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or has any dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage from the area at around the time it occurred,” he said.

What the council said
Cllr Gio Iozzi is Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Transport. In a statement on Friday he said he was “absolutely horrified” by the news.
“Every death on our roads is a tragedy for their family, their friends and their community. Every child and young person deserves to travel to and from their school safely,” he said.
He said he will visit the site next week to talk to officers and police.

The road safety record on North Road and in Haringey
North Road is a short stretch of the B519, about 470 metres long, running from Highgate High Street north towards North Hill. OpenStreetMap records a 20mph limit along it.
We matched the Department for Transport’s road casualty statistics for 2021 to 2025 to the line of the road. They record five injury collisions on North Road in those five years:
- all five were slight injuries
- two injured a cyclist and two a motorcyclist
- none injured a pedestrian, and nobody was killed
So in the five years to the end of 2025, the government’s record has no pedestrian hurt on North Road. Thursday’s collision will not appear in the data until the 2026 figures are published.
Across Haringey the picture is different. The same data records 801 pedestrians injured on the borough’s roads from 2021 to 2025. Of those, 197 were seriously injured and 9 were killed.
Children and teenagers make up a real share of that. The data records 159 pedestrians under 18 hurt in Haringey over the five years, 25 of them seriously. None of them died.
The yearly figures for pedestrians killed or seriously injured were 30 in 2021, 47 in 2022, 49 in 2023, 35 in 2024 and 45 in 2025.
The statistics count only collisions reported to the police in which someone was hurt. The newest year can be revised. The locations are as police recorded them, so a collision logged a few metres off the road line may be missed.
