Crouch End Roadworks: Nelson Road Shuts 30 Sept for 17 Weeks

A burst water main on Tottenham Lane has six bus routes off Crouch End Broadway. Transport for London has the 41, 91, N41, N91, W3 and W5 diverted in both directions until 5pm on Thursday 24 September.

Thames Water’s next long closure follows a week later. Nelson Road shuts on 30 September for around 17 weeks, in four phases, which is the longest single closure the mains scheme has published in Crouch End.

This is our regular check of Crouch End roadworks, bus diversions and rail closures. Seven things changed since the last one, on 19 September:

• Tottenham Lane burst. TfL put the 41, 91, N41, N91, W3 and W5 on diversion on Sunday 20 September. The Crouch End Broadway stops are missed in both directions until 5pm on Thursday.
• Berkeley Road N8 is closed today, 22 September, for carriageway resurfacing between Coleridge Road and Crouch Hall Road.
• Ridge Road N8 comes back. Thames Water has it from 24 to 30 September, from Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road, ahead of starting Nelson Road itself.
• The 41 is cut short at Hornsey Rise until 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 September, for the same Cadent Gas works that has the 210 off Hazellville Road. Both were due to end on 21 September and have been extended by nine days.
• Haringey’s register refreshed again, to the week beginning 21 September. That is a second weekly update in a row, after seven weeks stuck on 27 July. It still lists Crouch Hill as closed to 2 November, and it still does not carry Nelson Road.
• Hatherley Gardens outside Hornsey Town Hall has been brought forward by four weeks, to 14 September to 6 November.
• The Piccadilly line shuts this weekend, 26 and 27 September, between Cockfosters and Uxbridge. That takes out Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Bounds Green and Manor House.

Three things ended on 21 September: the Broadway contraflow at Middle Lane, the Rose Place footway work and the BT duct laying on Shepherds Hill.

This page sets out what is actually closed in Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Highgate right now, which buses have moved, and the parking and route arithmetic that stays true after the cones go.

One warning about the council’s own source. Haringey’s weekly roadworks register is updating weekly again, and the 21 September edition has picked up Berkeley Road and the return of Ridge Road. It is still not complete and it is still not accurate. It still lists Crouch Hill as closed from 9 February to 2 November, five days after the road reopened. It still does not carry Nelson Road at all, which is the longest closure now booked. It carries nothing about the Tottenham Lane burst main, and neither does Thames Water’s Crouch End project page. Where the register and Transport for London disagree below, we have gone with TfL, because its diversions change on the day.

Crouch Hill is open again, 46 days early

Crouch Hill had been under a temporary road closure since 9 February 2026 for Thames Water’s mains replacement. Every date published until this month gave the end as 2 November. It reopened on 17 September: 220 days closed rather than 266.

Two things confirm it. Thames Water’s project page no longer names Crouch Hill among the streets it is working on, having listed it at the top of that section for seven months. And TfL’s status for the W7 is back to a good service with no diversion notice, on a route that had been diverted away from Crouch Hill and Crouch Hill station since February. We reported the early reopening when the date first appeared, in Crouch Hill reopens six weeks early.

The council’s own pages have not caught up. The weekly register still gives 9 February to 2 November in its 21 September edition, and the major roadworks page still describes the scheme as running “from Monday 9 February for up to 9 months in 4 locations”.

The Tottenham Lane burst main, and the six routes it moved

A burst water main on Tottenham Lane N8 is the live disruption at the Broadway. TfL’s notice, issued on Sunday 20 September, puts six routes on diversion in both directions until 5pm on Thursday 24 September:

• 41, 91, N41 and N91 go via Park Road, Priory Road and High Street. They miss the stops from Crouch End Broadway “CA” to Harvey Road “T” northbound, and from Hornsey Station “U” to Crouch End Broadway / Park Road “CB” southbound.
• W3, towards Northumberland Park, goes via Tottenham Lane and High Street, missing Tottenham Lane YMCA “W” and Palace Road “Q”.
• W5, towards Harringay, goes via The Broadway, Crouch Hill, Mount View Road, Ferme Park Road and Weston Park, missing Crouch End Broadway “CA” and Tottenham Lane YMCA “S”.

Tottenham Lane is the A103, the main road east out of the Broadway towards Hornsey and Turnpike Lane, which is why a single burst there moves so many routes at once.

Two caveats. TfL’s notice is the only published record we can find: the burst is not on Haringey’s register for the week beginning 21 September, and it is not on Thames Water’s Crouch End project page, which suggests it is an emergency repair rather than part of the mains scheme. And TfL gives an end time, not a promise. If the excavation runs on, the diversion runs on with it.

Nelson Road, from 30 September, in four phases

Thames Water’s page now books Nelson Road N8 from 30 September 2026 for around 17 weeks, under a phased road closure between the junction with Ridge Road and the junction with Weston Park. Seventeen weeks from 30 September runs to the end of January. Each phase “should take around four weeks to complete”, and parking suspensions apply throughout.

The four phases, as published:

• Phase one: the junction of Ridge Road up to approximately 15 Nelson Road
• Phase two: 15 Nelson Road up to approximately 41 Nelson Road
• Phase three: 41 Nelson Road up to approximately 75 Nelson Road
• Phase four: 75 Nelson Road to Weston Park

Nelson Road is still not in the council’s weekly register, in the 21 September edition or any before it. Thames Water’s own project page is the only place it is published. The register does now carry the run-up to it: Ridge Road N8, from the junction with Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road, closed 24 to 30 September for the same mains replacement.

The mains scheme, and where each phase stands

Thames Water is replacing the Victorian water mains under Crouch End. The council puts the scheme at £13 million, replacing more than 8km of ageing Victorian pipes, serving about 3,000 properties across 29 streets. Cabinet member Seema Chandwani described it as a “two-year programme” across the borough. Crouch Hill was chosen first because it has burst repeatedly in recent years.

Working hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. Pedestrian access to homes and businesses is kept open throughout, along with emergency access, and parking bays are suspended in each phase as it moves. Thames Water’s number for this scheme is 0800 316 9800, quoting reference BB01441522.

Ridge Road is back for a week. It was finished in August, and the 21 September register books it again from 24 to 30 September, from the junction with Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road. That is the junction Nelson Road’s phase one starts from, on 30 September.

Two of those come with a caveat worth knowing before you search for them.

Thames Water spells the new Crouch End closure “Haselmere Road”. The street is Haslemere Road N8, which is how the council’s register spells it and how it appears in OpenStreetMap. The two organisations also describe different lengths of it: Thames Water gives the work as running from the junction with Crouch Hill up to Oakfield Court, with driveway access affected and access kept for residents of Oakfield Court; the council gives it as the junction with Crouch Hill to Crouch End Hill, which is the longer stretch. Thames Water says eight weeks from 14 September, which would end on 9 November; the council says 13 November.

Granville Road is settled. When Thames Water first published it, it gave no postcode, and Haringey has more than one Granville Road. The council’s register now places it in Stroud Green ward as Granville Road N4, from the junction with Ridge Road to the junction with Mount View Road, from 4 September to 8 October. Thames Water’s “around five weeks” from 4 September lands in the same week.

The two hills, and why the diversion looked wrong

Crouch End’s geography catches people out, including satnavs, and it is the reason a single closure here hurts. Two different roads leave the Broadway going downhill to the south, their names differ by one word, and they are different classified routes to different places:

• Crouch Hill is the A1201. It runs southeast to Crouch Hill station, Stroud Green Road and Finsbury Park. This is the one that was closed.
• Crouch End Hill is the A103. It runs southwest to Hornsey Rise and on towards Archway.

While Crouch Hill was shut, the direct line to Stroud Green and Finsbury Park went with it, and everything took the long way round by Crouch End Hill and Hornsey Rise. Both are open again.

Which buses have moved

Checked against TfL’s live status on 22 September.

Six routes are off Crouch End Broadway for the Tottenham Lane burst main. The 41, 91, N41, N91, W3 and W5 are diverted until 5pm on Thursday 24 September, as set out above. This is the change that matters most this week: between them those routes carry most of the traffic through the Broadway.

The 41 has a second problem, at the other end. From 6.30pm on Monday 21 September until 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 September, it is cutting short for Cadent Gas works at Hazellville Road N19. Towards Archway it terminates at the Hornsey Lane stop, and towards Tottenham Hale it starts from Hornsey Rise. So a 41 from Crouch End currently neither serves the Broadway stops nor runs the full way to Archway.

Route 210 is diverted for the same gas works, also until 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 September. Towards Brent Cross it runs via Hornsey Road, Tollington Road and Holloway Road, missing the stops from Fairbridge Road to Archway Road. Towards Finsbury Park it runs via St John’s Way, Holloway Road, Seven Sisters Road, Hornsey Road and Hanley Road. Both diversions were previously due to end on 21 September.

N41 is diverted twice, for the Tottenham Lane burst and for the Hazellville Road gas works, so overnight journeys between Crouch End and Trafalgar Square are affected at both ends.

The W7 is on its normal route. TfL shows a good service and no diversion notice, and it serves Crouch Hill and Crouch Hill station again after seven months of diversion. The W7 is the Muswell Hill Broadway to Finsbury Park route, so for anyone commuting south this week it is the reliable one.

The Highgate Close stops on Hampstead Lane N6 are still closed in both directions, on the 210, 310 and 603. TfL’s notice says only to use the next or previous stop, and gives neither a reason nor an end date. That has now stood for more than a fortnight.

Route 329 is running normally, after its Wood Green short working for the Turnpike Lane bus station rebuild ended on 18 September.

Routes 102, 123, 184, 232, 299 and 603 show a good service on their Haringey sections. The 43’s diversions are all in the City of London and do not affect its Highgate and Archway end. The Caledonian Road diversion that had the 91 and N91 running via York Way last week has been lifted.

No strike notices. The Arriva North London dispute was settled on 7 September, and TfL’s bus status carries no strike warning for any route. Our report on the deal has the terms, including cab air conditioning by May 2027.

Routes 91, 123, 232 and N91 changed permanently on Saturday 1 August, and this is not roadworks. TfL rebuilt these routes around the Haringey Heartlands development:

• 91 now runs Trafalgar Square to Wood Green, keeping its old route as far as Crouch End and then going on via Haringey Heartlands to Wood Green station.
• 123 now runs Ilford to Turnpike Lane station at all times.
• 232 keeps its route to Wood Green station and then continues to Haringey Heartlands, Coburg Road.
• N91 runs via Haringey Heartlands between Hornsey and Wood Green station rather than via Turnpike Lane and Wood Green High Road.

The buses that call at Crouch End Broadway itself are the 41, 91, W5 and W7, plus the N41 and N91 at night. The W3, despite how often it gets recommended locally, does not stop at the Broadway.

If you change at Finsbury Park

A separate Thames Water main replacement at Highbury Grove N5, about two miles south of Crouch End, still has routes 4, 19, N19 and 236 diverted in both directions until 6pm on Monday 2 November. That job now outlasts Crouch Hill by six weeks. The 19 and N19 are not serving the stops between Highbury Corner and Finsbury Park Interchange.

TfL also has lane restrictions on Seven Sisters Road at Woodberry Grove, between Green Lanes and Amhurst Park, until 24 October, with Woodberry Grove and Lordship Road closed in both directions towards the junction. A separate lane one closure is in place southbound at Culvert Road N15, for urgent UK Power Networks cable repairs, until 28 September.

If you drive west towards East Finchley

Affinity Water has lane restrictions on the A1000 High Road N2 at the Fortis Green junction, in both directions, from 21 to 28 September. Fortis Green is the A504, the road along the top from Muswell Hill Broadway, so this is the one that catches Muswell Hill drivers heading for the A1000.

Trains: the Piccadilly line shuts this weekend

Checked against TfL’s line status for the fortnight from 22 September. One closure stands in it, and it is ours:

• Piccadilly line, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September: no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge, from 2am Saturday and all day Sunday, including Friday and Saturday Night Tube. That closes Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Bounds Green, Manor House and Arnos Grove. Trains still run between Acton Town and Heathrow. Use the District line between central London and Acton Town or Ealing Common, the Metropolitan line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, and the Elizabeth line for Heathrow. Replacement buses operate.
• Suffragette line: a good service, and nothing planned. Crouch Hill station is open, and the Sunday closures of 6 and 13 September are over. Our autumn closures report has the later dates.

The Weaver line, the Victoria and Northern lines and Great Northern trains from Hornsey and Harringay all show a good service with nothing planned in the fortnight. If you are heading for Stansted, note that the Weaver line closure that sent Greater Anglia and Stansted Express trains to Tottenham Hale instead of Seven Sisters was the weekend of 19 and 20 September, and is over.

Everything else dug up right now

From the council’s register for the week beginning 21 September, checked against today’s date, with the schemes Thames Water and TfL publish elsewhere added in. Everything here is either live now or booked to start.

Four of those deserve a flag.

Berkeley Road is closed today only. The register books carriageway resurfacing on 22 September between the junction with Coleridge Road and Crouch Hall Road, under a temporary road closure. A one day job on a residential street, but it is the only Crouch End closure that starts and finishes inside this week.

Farrer Road is an “urgent repair” running four months. Thames Water’s job between Farrer Mews and Park Road, in Hornsey, started on 17 August and the register books the road closure through to 23 December. It has not appeared on Thames Water’s Crouch End project page at any point, which suggests it is a separate repair rather than part of the mains scheme.

Hornsey Town Hall’s forecourt has already started. The council moved the Hatherley Gardens N8 work forward by four weeks. The 14 September register gave it as 12 October to 6 November; the 21 September edition gives it as 14 September to 6 November, and now calls it carriageway rather than footway improvement, at the end of the cul-de-sac outside the town hall.

Bounds Green Road is now published as phases, not a single block. The major roadworks page still describes the 20mph scheme as about 11 weeks of two way signals from 24 August, between Braemar Avenue and the North Circular, after a 2025 consultation in which 76% of respondents backed it. The register splits the highways work into dated sections: the Cline Road junction ended on 15 September, the Passmore Gardens and Blake Road junction runs 21 September to 13 October, and the Truro Road junction follows from 19 October to 10 November. From TfL’s route data the 102, 184, 232 and 299 all run along Bounds Green Road, and all four showed a good service when we checked.

One quirk of the register worth knowing if you use it yourself: the same job can appear under several wards, and some of them are nowhere near it. The Bounds Green Road entries now sit under both Bounds Green and Woodside, and in the 21 September edition Muswell Hill, Fortis Green, Bruce Grove, Tottenham Green and White Hart Lane all read “no planned activities in this ward”. That is a statement about the register, not about those streets.

Finished since our last update

Worth saying plainly, because a roadworks page that only ever adds closures is useless. These have run their course since 19 September:

• The Broadway N8 contraflow at Middle Lane, and the Rose Place footway work behind it, both ended on 21 September.
• Shepherds Hill N6, where BT Circet’s duct laying ended on 21 September.
• The 91 and N91 southbound diversion at Caledonian Road N1, now lifted.
• The Weaver line closure of 19 and 20 September, which sent Stansted trains to Tottenham Hale instead of Seven Sisters.
• The Piccadilly line closure between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town on 19 and 20 September.

One correction to our last update. We recorded Lockmead Road N15 in South Tottenham as finished on 18 September, from the previous register. The 21 September edition gives the Thames Water work there as running to 25 September, so it is still live. Corrected here on 22 September 2026.

And from earlier: Crouch Hill N8, which reopened on 17 September after 220 days, the W7 diversion lifted with it, the route 329 short working at Wood Green, Alexandra Park Road N22, Hartham Road N17, Coningsby Road N4, the Kentish Town Road NW1 diversion, the C11 diversion at Raydon Street N19, the Suffragette line Sunday closures, the Arriva strikes, Cranbourne Road N10, Park View Road N17, Wolseley Road N8, Dickenson Road N8, Muswell Hill Road N6, Birkbeck Road N8, Hampstead Lane N6, High Street N8 and The Avenue N10. Ridge Road N8 was on that list and is not any more: Thames Water returns to it from 24 to 30 September.

The routes that matter when something closes

The reason a single closure hurts here is that Crouch End sits in a bowl with a small number of classified roads through it, and the alternatives are residential streets that were never meant to carry the traffic. These are the through routes, with their classifications from OpenStreetMap:

The useful thing to take from that is which closures actually matter. Anything on the A103 through the Broadway is the serious one, because there is no parallel classified route: traffic goes into the side streets. That is exactly what the Tottenham Lane burst main has done this week, and it is why six bus routes moved for one hole in the road. A closure on the A1201, which is what Crouch Hill was, is bad but survivable, because the A103 absorbs it. And Wightman Road is the pressure valve for all of it, which is why it gets mentioned every time something else shuts.

Parking, and the two hour windows

Crouch End is covered by two controlled parking zones, and their hours are different in a way that catches out visitors and rewards anyone who reads the signs:

• Crouch End A (CEA): Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon.
• Crouch End B (CEB): Monday to Friday, 2pm to 4pm.

Both zones were introduced in 2009 and extended in 2011, and both sets of hours were reviewed and deliberately kept. Haringey consulted on CEA in November 2022, got 773 resident responses, and the Head of Highways and Parking approved retaining the 10am to 12 noon times on 16 October 2023. On CEB, 81.2% of those who responded did not want the hours changed either.

The catch is what happens outside those two hours. The CEB review papers record residents complaining that because the zone only bites from 2pm to 4pm, anyone can park free “until 2pm and then go home”, including commuters and drivers avoiding the neighbouring Islington zones. A short controlled window keeps residents’ bays free at the moment they need them and leaves the rest of the day open, which is either the point or the problem depending on who you ask.

The same CEA decision increased the waiting and loading restrictions on Broadway from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, to Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6.30pm.

During the mains work, parking bays are suspended along each street as the job reaches it, so a permit does not guarantee a space on a road being dug up. Nelson Road residents should expect that from 30 September, phase by phase.

Before you drive: what to check

• Haringey’s weekly roadworks register by ward is the fullest single list of streetworks in the borough, organised by ward, with dates and the traffic measure for each job. Check the heading date before you trust it: it spent seven weeks on the edition of 27 July, and it has updated weekly since 14 September. It does not carry emergency repairs, which is why the Tottenham Lane burst main is not in it.
• The council’s current and upcoming major roadworks page covers the big schemes, though its Crouch End entry is now out of date.
• TfL bus status carries the diversions in full and is more current than anything the council publishes, because it changes the day a diversion starts.
• Thames Water’s project page, which is the only place Nelson Road has been published, or 0800 316 9800, reference BB01441522, for anything to do with the mains scheme.

Of those, the register is the fuller list and TfL is the more current one, but neither is reliably right. Read both, and expect the road to disagree with each.

Frequently asked questions

Is Crouch Hill open?

Yes. It reopened on Thursday 17 September 2026, after 220 days closed for Thames Water mains replacement, and 46 days ahead of the 2 November date published for most of the year. The W7 serves Crouch Hill and Crouch Hill station again.

Is Crouch Hill station open?

Yes, and the Suffragette line has nothing planned in the next fortnight. The Sunday closures on 6 and 13 September are over.

Are the buses on strike?

No. Arriva North London drivers voted to accept a new deal and Unite called off the strikes on 7 September. No further strike dates stand. The deal includes air conditioning in drivers’ cabs by May 2027.

Is the Tube closed this weekend?

Yes. The Piccadilly line has no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge from 2am on Saturday 26 September and all day on Sunday 27 September, including the Friday and Saturday Night Tube. That closes Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Bounds Green, Manor House and Arnos Grove. Replacement buses operate, and trains still run between Acton Town and Heathrow.

What is Thames Water doing in Crouch End?

Replacing more than 8km of Victorian water mains across 29 streets, at a cost of about £13 million, serving roughly 3,000 properties. Crouch Hill was first because it had burst repeatedly. Work runs 7.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays, and Thames Water says the scheme covers those 29 streets “over the next year”.

What are the Crouch End parking zone hours?

Crouch End A operates Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon. Crouch End B operates Monday to Friday, 2pm to 4pm. Outside those windows you do not need a permit in either zone.

Which buses go from Crouch End Broadway?

The 41, 91, W5 and W7 by day, and the N41 and N91 at night. The 91 was extended on 1 August 2026 and now runs through to Wood Green station via Haringey Heartlands. The W3 does not serve Crouch End Broadway. All of those except the W7 are on diversion away from the Broadway stops this week for the Tottenham Lane burst main.

Are Crouch Hill and Crouch End Hill the same road?

No. Crouch Hill is the A1201 and runs southeast towards Stroud Green and Finsbury Park. Crouch End Hill is the A103 and runs southwest towards Hornsey Rise and Archway. Only Crouch Hill was closed.
