Crouch End roadworks: Crouch Hill shut until 2 November

One road out of Crouch End Broadway has been shut since February and is not due back until November. That single closure, on Crouch Hill, is the reason the W7 no longer goes the way it used to, the reason Stroud Green traffic arrives at the Broadway from an odd direction, and the reason a two minute drive to Finsbury Park has been a fifteen minute one all summer.

This page sets out what is actually closed in Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Highgate right now, which buses have moved, and the parking and route arithmetic that stays true after the cones go.

Crouch Hill: closed since 9 February, due back 2 November

Thames Water is replacing the Victorian water mains under Crouch End. Crouch Hill has been under a temporary road closure since 9 February 2026 and Haringey’s own roadworks register gives the end date as 2 November 2026, which is a little over eight and a half months of closure on a classified A road.

The two published descriptions of the closed length differ slightly. Haringey’s weekly roadworks register describes the work as being on Crouch Hill “and at its junction between The Broadway and Mount View Road”. Thames Water and the council’s scheme page give the closure as running “from the junction of The Broadway to Haringey Park”. Haringey Park is the further of the two, so treat the longer stretch as the one to plan around.

The scheme it belongs to is large. The council puts it at £13 million, replacing more than 8km of ageing Victorian pipes, serving about 3,000 properties across 29 streets. Cabinet member Seema Chandwani described it as a “two-year programme” across the borough. Crouch Hill was chosen first because it has burst repeatedly in recent years.

Working hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. Pedestrian access to homes and businesses is kept open throughout, along with emergency access, and parking bays are suspended in each phase as it moves. Thames Water’s number for this scheme is 0800 316 9800, quoting reference BB01441522.

The other phases published for the scheme, with their start dates and the council’s stated durations:

Dickenson Road, between Crouch Hill and Elm Grove, is the phase running now, and it finishes on 14 August. Ridge Road finishes a day earlier, on 13 August.

The two hills, and why the diversion looks wrong

Crouch End’s geography catches people out, including satnavs. Two different roads leave the Broadway going downhill to the south, their names differ by one word, and they are different classified routes to different places:

• Crouch Hill is the A1201. It runs southeast to Crouch Hill station, Stroud Green Road and Finsbury Park. This is the closed one.
• Crouch End Hill is the A103. It runs southwest to Hornsey Rise and on towards Archway.

So the closure has not cut Crouch End off from the south. It has cut off the direct line to Stroud Green and Finsbury Park, and everything now goes the long way round via Crouch End Hill and Hornsey Rise. If you have been told to take “Crouch End Hill” and thought it was a mistake, it was not.

Which buses have moved

Four separate things are happening to buses around Crouch End at once, and one of them is permanent.

The W7 is diverted until 6pm on Monday 2 November. Transport for London has it diverted in both directions between Stroud Green Road and Crouch End Broadway, not serving Crouch Hill station or Crouch Hill at all, and running instead via Hanley Road, Hornsey Rise and Crouch End Hill. The W7 is the Muswell Hill Broadway to Finsbury Park route, so this is the one that matters most for commuters here. The Broadway stop CC is suspended for the works.

The W5 is diverted until 6pm on Monday 24 August, because of the Ridge Road phase. It runs via Mount View Road and Ferme Park Road instead, and because much of the W5 is hail and ride, the effect is a run of missing stops: Ridge Road, Uplands Road and Weston Park Primary School towards Archway, and Weston Park, Mayfield Road, Weston Park Primary School and Stationers Park towards Harringay.

Routes 43 and 134 are diverted until 6pm on Friday 14 August, this time for Thames Water work on Muswell Hill Road in N6. They run via Archway Road, Great North Road and Fortis Green Road, and the stops from Wood Lane / Highgate Station to Fortis Green Road are not served in either direction. Worth knowing that this one does not appear on the council’s ward list at all: Muswell Hill ward is recorded there as having no planned activities.

Routes 91, 123, 232 and N91 changed permanently on Saturday 1 August, and this is not roadworks. TfL has rebuilt these routes around the Haringey Heartlands development:

• 91 now runs Trafalgar Square to Wood Green, keeping its present route as far as Crouch End and then going on via Haringey Heartlands to Wood Green station.
• 123 now runs Ilford to Turnpike Lane station at all times.
• 232 keeps its route to Wood Green station and then continues to Haringey Heartlands, Coburg Road.
• N91 runs via Haringey Heartlands between Hornsey and Wood Green station rather than via Turnpike Lane and Wood Green High Road.

For Crouch End the practical change is the 91: it no longer terminates where it did, and it is now a through route to Wood Green station.

One more, further east: route 329 is running short until 6pm on Friday 18 September while Turnpike Lane bus station is rebuilt. Northbound buses terminate at Wood Green station and southbound ones start from Wood Green bus garage.

The buses that call at Crouch End Broadway itself are the 41, 91, W5 and W7, plus the N41 and N91 at night. The W3, despite how often it gets recommended locally, does not stop at the Broadway.

Everything else dug up right now

Haringey publishes a register of streetworks by ward and updates it weekly. The list below is from the edition for the week beginning 27 July 2026, filtered to the west of the borough, with the jobs that are live or imminent:

Two of those deserve a flag. Sheldon Avenue in Highgate runs to 4 January 2027, which is the longest single closure anywhere in the borough’s current list. Shepherds Hill is booked for the week schools go back, 14 to 18 September, on the road that carries traffic between Highgate station and Crouch End.

Separately, National Highways and TfL list a lane closure on the A1 Aylmer Road westbound at The Bishops Avenue for urgent water repairs, running from 5 to 12 August. That one straddles the Barnet and Haringey boundary just above Highgate.

The routes that matter when something closes

The reason a single closure hurts here is that Crouch End sits in a bowl with a small number of classified roads through it, and the alternatives are residential streets that were never meant to carry the traffic. These are the through routes, with their classifications from OpenStreetMap:

The useful thing to take from that is which closures actually matter. Anything on the A103 through the Broadway is the serious one, because there is no parallel classified route: traffic goes into the side streets. A closure on the A1201, which is what has happened, is bad but survivable, because the A103 absorbs it. And Wightman Road is the pressure valve for all of it, which is why it gets mentioned every time something else shuts.

Parking, and the two hour windows

Crouch End is covered by two controlled parking zones, and their hours are different in a way that catches out visitors and rewards anyone who reads the signs:

• Crouch End A (CEA): Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon.
• Crouch End B (CEB): Monday to Friday, 2pm to 4pm.

Both zones were introduced in 2009 and extended in 2011, and both sets of hours were reviewed and deliberately kept. Haringey consulted on CEA in November 2022, got 773 resident responses, and the Head of Highways and Parking approved retaining the 10am to 12 noon times on 16 October 2023. On CEB, 81.2% of those who responded did not want the hours changed either.

The catch is what happens outside those two hours. The CEB review papers record residents complaining that because the zone only bites from 2pm to 4pm, anyone can park free “until 2pm and then go home”, including commuters and drivers avoiding the neighbouring Islington zones. A short controlled window keeps residents’ bays free at the moment they need them and leaves the rest of the day open, which is either the point or the problem depending on who you ask.

The same CEA decision increased the waiting and loading restrictions on Broadway from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, to Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6.30pm.

During the mains work, parking bays are suspended along each street as the job reaches it, so a permit does not guarantee a space on a road being dug up.

Is Crouch Hill closed?
