The 91 will run beyond Crouch End Broadway to Wood Green through the new Heartlands estate after Haringey signed off the last road changes on 23 July.
The 91 bus is finally getting its extension from Crouch End Broadway to Wood Green. Haringey Council announced on 4 August that the last road changes needed for the extension have been approved, after Cllr Gio Iozzi, Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Transport, signed off the measures on 23 July.
The extension takes the 91, which currently terminates at Crouch End Broadway, on to Wood Green via Hornsey Park Road, Clarendon Road, Mary Neuner Road, Western Road and Mayes Road. That gives Crouch End a direct bus to Wood Green’s shops and the Piccadilly line for the first time, and serves Haringey Heartlands, the car-free development on the former Hornsey gas works site that will provide around 2,000 new homes once complete.
Two other routes change with it. The N91 night bus will be rerouted through Heartlands, connecting the new neighbourhood to London’s night bus network. The 232 will run from Wood Green via Station Road and Mayes Road to a new terminus at Coburg Road; the council’s decision report notes this is a temporary routing, with the permanent route to follow after 2028. Transport for London also plans to withdraw route 123 from Wood Green High Road.
Why it took two and a half years
TfL consulted on the changes to routes 91, N91, 123 and 232 between 30 October and 10 December 2023, received 488 responses, and decided on 14 March 2024 to proceed with the scheme as consulted.
Haringey approved the supporting road changes in May 2024, but the bus-specific measures were never implemented. The council’s decision report is unusually candid about why: the parking bays, restrictions, bus stop and bus stand needed for the extension were held back “because a suitable location for bus driver welfare units had not been identified”. With that resolved, the council ran a fresh statutory consultation between 17 June and 8 July 2026 on the outstanding measures, then signed them off on 23 July.
What was approved
The 23 July decision covers one new bus stop on Mayes Road and a new bus stand on Coburg Road, which has been enlarged from the 12 metres originally proposed to 23 metres at TfL’s request so two buses can stand at once. To make room, the scheme removes 5 shared paid-and-permit parking spaces, 22 resident permit spaces and 4 business permit spaces, and adds lengths of double yellow line on both roads.
Cllr Iozzi said: “I’m proud to sign off this new bus scheme which will make a real difference to people living in the car-free Heartlands regeneration area.”
What it means for you
If you use the 91 from Crouch End: your bus will keep serving Crouch End Broadway and its existing route into central London; the change adds the leg onward to Wood Green. No start date has been announced yet. TfL implements the routes now the road works are approved, and we will report the date when it is confirmed. If you live near Mayes Road or Coburg Road: 31 parking spaces go in total, 22 of them resident permit spaces, and the traffic orders for the new restrictions were approved on 23 July. Objections were heard as part of the June and July statutory consultation; the council’s response to them is set out in the decision papers linked above.
