Haringey has approved a red route on Wood Green High Road, Turnpike Lane to Bounds Green Road. No stopping at any time, camera enforced, £197,000 scheme.
Haringey Council has approved a red route on the High Road in Wood Green. It covers the A105 between Turnpike Lane and Bounds Green Road, about two miles north east of Crouch End.
The Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Transport signed it off on Tuesday 13 October, according to the council’s decision notice. The decision was taken against the majority view in the council’s first round of engagement.
What was decided
The notice records three resolutions:
- the objections from the consultation were considered, with the officers’ responses
- the council will not hold a public inquiry
- the red route goes ahead, made by traffic management orders
The decision is subject to call-in. The council’s decision record gives it effect from Tuesday 20 October if it is not called in. No date has been published for the signs, markings or cameras going in.
What changes on the road
The existing “no waiting and no loading” restrictions become “no stopping at any time”. The officers’ report says no parking or loading bays are removed.
The report puts the cost at £197,000. Of that, £170,576 is for supplying and installing enforcement cameras. The money comes from the council’s parking investment plan, “subject to agreement” of Better Bus Partnership funding from TfL.
The reasons given in the decision notice are clear access for two-way traffic, buses and emergency vehicles. It says illegal and poor parking now causes congestion and puts pedestrians at risk where vehicles block the footway.
What people said
The council consulted twice. The report gives these figures:
| Stage | Responses | For | Against |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engagement, 9 August to 13 September 2024 | 196 | 80 (41%) | 116 (59%) |
| Statutory consultation, 17 September to 8 October 2025 | 44 | 18 support, 7 partly support | 17 object, 1 partly objects |
Officers wrote that more than half of the 2024 objections rested on “the incorrect perception” that parking or loading would be removed. In their view the red route is “an essential intervention” for a key north to south road through the borough.
Objections in the 2025 round included early morning deliveries, too few loading bays, and the road already taking traffic displaced from low traffic neighbourhoods.
What it means for you
- If you drive to Wood Green’s shops, the parking and loading bays stay. Stopping anywhere else on the High Road between Turnpike Lane and Bounds Green Road will be enforced by camera once the scheme is in.
- If you take the bus, this is the stretch the council wants to keep clear. The 29, 121, 141, 144, 221 and 329 all call at the Wood Green station stops on it.
- If you run a business on the High Road, check the loading bay times outside your premises before the markings change.
We first reported the proposal in our guide to the council’s week of 12 October. We will add the start date when the council or TfL publishes it.
