The Wood Green red route starts Monday 2 November: no stopping at any time on the A105 High Road or the first metres of 14 side roads, except in bays.
The red route on Wood Green High Road comes into force on Monday 2 November. From that day you cannot stop on the A105 between Turnpike Lane and Bounds Green Road at any time, except in a signed bay. Wood Green is about two miles north east of Crouch End.
Haringey Council made the traffic order on 23 October. It gave public notice of it on 28 October, with 2 November as the date it comes into operation. The council approved the scheme on 13 October, as we reported at the time.
Where the new rule applies
The order turns the existing “no waiting, no loading” lines into no stopping at any time, except in signed bays. It covers both sides of the High Road from Green Lanes and Turnpike Lane to about 12 metres north of Bounds Green Road.
It also runs a short way into the side roads. These are the stretches, measured from the High Road junction:
| Side road | How far the red route runs |
|---|---|
| Bounds Green Road N22 | About 17 metres, both sides |
| Watsons Road N22 | About 11 metres (north side), 2 metres (south side) |
| Cranbrook Park N22 | About 7.9 metres (north side), 13.5 metres (south side) |
| River Park House car park access road N22 | About 7 metres, both sides |
| Station Road N22 | About 31 metres, both sides, plus the whole of the arm round the island outside River Park House |
| Lordship Lane N22 | About 15 metres (north side), 8 metres (south side) |
| Buller Road N22 | About 11 metres, both sides |
| Alexandra Road N8 | About 21.7 metres, both sides |
| Brampton Park Road N22 | About 13.1 metres, both sides |
| Courcey Road N22/N8 | About 18.5 metres, both sides |
| Coleraine Road N8/N22 | About 15 metres, both sides |
| Whymark Avenue N22 | About 14 metres, both sides |
| Turnpike Lane N8 | About 7 metres on the north west side, next to 679 Green Lanes |
| Westbury Avenue N22 | About 16 metres on the north west side, outside nos 1 and 3 |
The other changes in the order
- A new 20-metre red route stretch on the west side of the High Road, from outside nos 12a to 12d to the boundary of 14/15 The Broadway, and 2.5 metres on the east side by nos 22 and 24.
- The two bus stops outside and opposite Morrisons, at nos 199 to 201, will operate at any time.
- A motorcycle bay of about 5 metres on the north side of Buller Road, in the footway by the Wetherspoon, is formalised. The notice says this changes nothing on the ground.
Existing marked parking and loading bays inside these stretches stay, with their current hours. Outside those hours they work as free parking, the notice says.
What it means for you
- If you drive to Wood Green, do not pull in on the High Road to drop someone off or nip into a shop, from Monday. Use a marked bay and read its hours.
- If you turn into a side road, the red lines carry on round the corner for up to 31 metres, so the first few car lengths of Station Road, Lordship Lane or Alexandra Road are no longer somewhere to wait.
- If you take the bus, this is the point of the scheme. The council’s decision notice gave clear access for buses and emergency vehicles as its reason. The 29, 121, 141, 144, 221 and 329 all use the Wood Green station stops.
- If you want to challenge the order, the notice says an application to the High Court must be made within six weeks of 23 October, on the ground that it does not comply with the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. You can arrange to inspect the order at Alexandra House, 10 Station Road, by emailing traffic.orders@haringey.gov.uk.
What we do not know yet
The notice gives the date the restrictions apply. It does not say when the council’s enforcement cameras will be switched on, or whether there will be a warning period. The officers’ report put the scheme at £197,000, of which £170,576 was for supplying and installing the cameras. We will add the camera date when the council publishes it.
The red line markings were painted during the night closures of the High Road between 26 and 31 October, which the council’s weekly roadworks register listed as “removal of the yellow road markings and install the new red route”. Our roadworks page has the week’s other closures.
