Thames Water expects Crouch Hill to reopen on Thursday, 46 days before the 2 November date. The W7 goes back to its normal route from Friday.

Crouch Hill is due to reopen on Thursday 17 September, more than six weeks ahead of schedule.

The road has been shut since 9 February for Thames Water’s mains replacement. Every published date until now said it would stay closed until 2 November. Thames Water’s project page now says: “Crouch Hill is expected to be reopened on 17 September.”

Transport for London agrees. Its W7 service notice says the route stays diverted “until Friday 18 September, when the road reopens”. The diversion’s end time in TfL’s data is 4am that Friday.

What changes, and when

  • Thursday 17 September: Thames Water expects Crouch Hill to reopen to traffic.
  • Friday 18 September: the W7 is due back on Crouch Hill, serving Crouch Hill station again in both directions.
  • Until then: the W7 still runs between Stroud Green Road and Crouch End Broadway via Hanley Road, Hornsey Rise and Crouch End Hill.

The closure will have lasted 220 days if it ends on Thursday. The 2 November date would have made it 266.

The official dates have not all caught up

Two council pages still carry the old timetable.

Haringey’s weekly roadworks register still gives the Crouch Hill closure as running to 2 November. That register has not been refreshed since the edition headed “week beginning 27 July”. The council’s scheme page still describes a closure “for around 9 months”.

Thames Water is doing the work and TfL runs the diversion, so their dates are the ones to go by. Thames Water’s own wording is “expected”, not confirmed. A road can slip by a day or two at the end of a job like this.

The mains work is not finished

Crouch Hill is one road in a bigger scheme. Thames Water is replacing more than 8km of Victorian pipes across 29 streets in Crouch End, at a cost of £13m. Its page says the work will run “over the next year”.

Tregaron Avenue is in Crouch End, N8. Thames Water does not say which Granville Road it means. Haringey has two: one in Stroud Green, N4, and one in Wood Green, N22. Neither closure appears on the council’s roadworks pages yet.

What it means for you

  • Drivers: from Thursday, Crouch Hill should again be the direct route from the Broadway to Stroud Green and Finsbury Park. Until then, keep using Crouch End Hill and Hornsey Rise.
  • W7 passengers: the Crouch Hill stops and Crouch Hill station should be served again from Friday morning. Check TfL’s bus status before you set off on Friday, in case the date moves.
  • Tregaron Avenue and Granville Road residents: expect full closures and suspended parking bays as each phase reaches you. Access to homes is kept open.
