Double Apple Kitchen on Turnpike Lane was rated 2 after an August inspection that reached the register late. 16 of 20 new ratings in N8, N10 and N6 are 5s.

Twenty food businesses in Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Highgate have new hygiene ratings on the register since our last roundup on 25 September. Sixteen scored the top mark of 5.

The lowest is on Turnpike Lane, about a mile east of Crouch End Broadway. Double Apple Kitchen, at 37-39 Turnpike Lane, N8, was rated 2 after an inspection on 28 August. A 2 means “improvement is necessary”.

That rating did not appear when we last checked the register. In our July and August roundup we warned that lower August ratings might still be held back while businesses could appeal. Five August and July ratings have appeared since, including the two lowest.

The figures come from the Food Standards Agency’s food hygiene rating register, read on 10 October. They cover the N8, N10 and N6 postcodes. Haringey Council carries out the inspections.

The two lowest, both on Turnpike Lane

Both were inspected on the same day, 28 August, and both share the N8 0EP postcode.

Business Address Rating Inspected
Double Apple Kitchen 37-39 Turnpike Lane, N8 2 28 August
Penang Satay House 9 Turnpike Lane, N8 3 28 August

The register also shows how each business scored in the three parts of the inspection. Lower is better on these scores.

  • Double Apple Kitchen scored 15 for food hygiene and safety, 10 for the structure and cleanliness of the premises, and 10 for confidence in management. On the FSA’s scale, 15 for hygiene means “improvement necessary”.
  • Penang Satay House scored 10 on all three, which means “generally satisfactory”.

Neither business has published a right to reply on the register. Both can ask Haringey for a re-inspection once they have made improvements.

Elsewhere in Haringey

The register holds five other ratings of 2 or below in Haringey since July, all outside our patch:

What it means for you

  • A 2 is not a closure. It means improvement is necessary. The rating is a snapshot of the day of the inspection.
  • Check before you book. Every business above links to its entry on the register, with the date of its last inspection.
  • Ratings can change quickly. A business rated 2 can ask for a re-inspection, and a new rating replaces the old one on the register.
  • Worried about somewhere? You can report a food problem to the FSA, which passes it to Haringey Council.
  • Looking for somewhere to eat? Our local business directory lists cafes, restaurants and shops across the area.

We will check the register again in a fortnight.
